Increasing your blog's readership is the goal of every
blogger, new or established, otherwise you wouldn't be writing.
So how can you do this easily and at no cost? One simple way
is through commenting on other blogs that are in your niche.
Of course just leaving a comment is not a guaranteed way to
generate traffic and may be a waste of time. If not done properly, it may
damage your reputation as a writer. Spamming, trolling or link dropping will
definitely get you booted. Some bloggers go as far as posting random comments that are irrelevant
to the posts just so as to link their sites.
Quality targeted comments are however a simple way to get
people interested and want to visit your site while at the same time helping
you connect with people who have the same interests as you do.
The first thing you should do is a quick Google search for
high ranking blogs, forums and social media sites which get thousands of hits
daily that provide the same content as you do.
Read through a few posts and comments to get a feel of the
blog and to ensure that it indeed is connected your niche. A high ranking blog
about retirement places will not be a good place to generate traffic to a blog
about holiday places for adrenaline junkies.
Be sure to subscribe to at least 5 of the high ranking ones.
Subscribing will ensure that you are notified whenever a new post is published
and therefore guarantee that you are always first if not among the first to
post a comment as most readers will usually only read the first few comments. You
may create a new email address for this if you don't want to clutter your Inbox.
The best way to guarantee that your comment will generate
traffic is to make sure your comment actually contributes to the post and if
possible also generates some responses. Creating a thread always makes you notice.
So writing "first" or thanking the blogger for his post is not the
way to go.
An opinion, question or just a personal contribution has
been of more value, not only to you but also to the blogger. Personalize it as
much as possible. Use your real name and a real picture and try to write about
100 words. Remember to always put quality over quantity. Not too long, not too
short. You may also promote your comment and the post on social media sites
which means a lot of fellow bloggers and they may reciprocate in turn thereby
giving you free advertising.
Some blogs use "do follow" links in their comments
sections and these may direct some traffic to your blog but only if your
contributions are relevant. Make sure that your links are directed to the
appropriate place. An off topic link or one that looks 'Spammy' will not get hit.
Please keep in mind that posting comments should not be used
as a replacement for making your content SEO friendly, social media marketing
or guest blogging.
